Explore the complex mythology and modern resurgence of the Hag, or Cailleach, a figure long demonised but now reclaimed as a symbol of power, wisdom, and resistance. Dr Tracy Fahey, Irish author and academic, guides audiences through the folklore, film and contemporary culture surrounding this ambiguous archetype, investigating her significance to collective history and her powerful resonance with today's conversations around ageing, femininity, nature and female agency.
Drawing on folk tales, cinema and modern media, this talk examines how the Hag has transformed from a figure of fear into one of sovereignty and transformation. Fahey, who holds a PhD in the Gothic and lectures in creative writing and folk horror at the Limerick School of Art and Design, TUS, explores the intersections between female folklore and contemporary anxieties, informed by her award-winning works including They Shut Me Up (shortlisted for the British Fantasy Award) and forthcoming titles Queens of the Crone Age and Women Changing.
Doors open at 7pm, with the talk starting at 7:30pm. Arrive early for a good seat.
