The Gustav Holst Ensemble presents an evening of masterpieces for strings and piano. Beethoven's String Trio in C minor, Op. 9 No. 3 opens the concert—a dramatic and expressive work composed in 1798 that stands among the greatest achievements in the string trio repertoire. Its passionate opening, lyrical Adagio, spirited Scherzo and brilliant finale showcase Beethoven's classical elegance combined with the boldness that would define his mature style.
The second half features Schubert's celebrated Piano Quintet in A major, D.667, "The Trout," one of the most cherished works in chamber music. Composed in 1819 for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, it radiates warmth and lyrical beauty throughout. The famous fourth movement presents sparkling variations on Schubert's song Die Forelle ("The Trout"), leading to a brilliant, energetic finale.
Musicians: Lucy Jeal (violin), Rachael Sheehy (viola), Pavlos Carvalho (cello), Sandy Burnett (double bass), John Reid (piano).
