Two engaging talks exploring the literary and cultural phenomenon of Gothic fiction and Dark Academia. The evening kicks off with an introduction to the history and appeal of Dark Academia—a genre now pervasive in books, film, television, fashion and interior design. Characterised by autumn aesthetics, sepia tones and ancient universities shrouded in mystery, Dark Academia draws on classic Gothic traditions such as murder, sorcery and concealed transgressions. Yet it also resonates with contemporary concerns: the commercialisation of education and questions of who truly has access to knowledge and privilege.
Speaker: Dr Sarah Gamble, Associate Professor of English Literature at Swansea University, specialises in contemporary Gothic fiction and women's writing. She is recognised for her scholarship on Angela Carter, having authored two monographs on her life and work, and most recently co-edited two volumes on Carter's past and future influence. Her current research focuses on dark academia and vampires.
Doors open at 6pm; the talk begins at 6:15pm. Arrive early for a good seat.
